I know that a tree swallow sighting would ordinarily not be remarkable. But
this was Oct. 21st, and I have seen no tree swallows for two months. As I
stepped out of the door of my house onto the deck where I had provided a
nest box for tree swallows back in the spring, and where they had
successfully fledged five young, a lone juvenile tree swallow glided in and
landed on the deck rail two feet from the nest box. It sat there preening
for a full ten minutes as I stood stock still, sacrificing the open door to
the invading box elder bugs. Then it took wing and was gone. I was glad it
was not there when later in the day a sharpie shot through and took a house
finch from the same spot.
Happy birding,
John Todd
