Was the +x done so that noone`s real host is visible ?
If yes is it possible to give a user
@Guest00001.users.undernet.org
@Guest00002.users.undernet.org etc etc
on connect. and when logged in it will change to the normal
username.users.undernet.org ?
If no is it possible to add an option to X to +x you automatically on
connect ? like /msg x set hidehost on or something
Sharing my thoughts :)

In stead off the client performing the mode +x, you could ma&ybe implement
a syntax change in the login message... That way you could have an optional
term, and the server would perform mode +x for you on login.
For exemple:
/msg [EMAIL PROTECTED] login <username> <paswoord> [option]
Maybe you could implement a /login cmd in the IRCu-code itself? If that is
used the server would give you the mode +x, just like opers recieve mode +O
when using /oper?
My 2 cents (euro's)
