or if you want to completely configure your bean factory
programmatically - xml is the only language CS speaks (right now), but
that doesn't mean you can't generate the xml on the fly.

Yep, exactly.  DefaultXmlBeanFactory can do the file reading for you,
but it doesn't have to.  It's usually easier just to let it, but if
you need complex parameterization of the bean config, you can
circumvent the automatic file reading.
