Again, spreadooo seems like a patent effort to re-locate the marketing
project and a good chunk of the NLC off of OOo. Do people want that?

That's weird.

I could have sworn the whole point of the SOO project was really simple... helping the OOo Community grow.

If it's a "lets make sure it's doesn't duplicate efforts issue" (which I reckon is weird to claim it is, when the site is barely up and running!), then let's think about it intelligently and make sure it _is_ an enhancement of things.

We (the OOo Community) are in a position where the people who sponsored SFF's technical infrastructure have made available as much server(s) plus bandwidth for us as we need.

That's a pretty good for starters.

As for "who's in control"... that would be us, the OOo Community. The few people thus far involved in the SOO project so far are looking for guidance from the established players how to make it work for everybody's enhancement, *not* looking to usurp control of it. Like, *why* would anyone want to do that? What's the prize of "winning" something like that? I can't think of anything sensible that would make it worthwhile!

I'm not seeing where this "relocation" of the marketing project can come from, because really, the OOo Marketing project is made up of already established people and this is just another avenue for the Marketing project to use.

I *do* now see where people's concern of "are we duplicating effort?" are coming from... the SFF setup has a lot of software modules with a lot of options. Some of the NLC Communities and the overall Marketing Project have created their own solutions for many things, so they don't have a need for some/all of these available options.

That just means each NLC Community (if it gets setup) just needs to say "don't turn on these options for us, we have them covered". So, duplication avoided. :)

If there *are* NLC Communities that can make use of some of these options, then voila... free hosting and bandwidth, and those Communities are in control of it!

With the SMP, surely this provision of resources can be worked into further the goals of the SMP plan somehow?

The only other thing I want to point out here (it only occurred to me after reading Louis' emails), is that perhaps there's some measure of knee-jerk reaction here from a "they're trying to replace Collab.Net" perspective.

That's truly not the case, and I personally don't think this effort would in any way take away from the central OOo online presence at all.

*If we do this right* however, it helps us grow the OOo Community, and that'll mean Collab.Net's servers will have *more* visitors rather than less, the NLC Communities will have *more* members rather than less, and the OOo Marketing Project will have *more* reach rather than less.

I hope that clarifies things so people can start working out how to collaboratively *use this tool* rather then just snub it for no reason.

Regards and best wishes,

Justin Clift

I do not.
