There was a hoppin' civilisation there and in Crete (Kreeta),
and then in about 1500 BC the island of Santorini blew up
and created the current volcanic cauldron (crater with water
in it), and the tidal wave wiped out the Minoans in Crete.
if you figure that Plato told the Atlantis myth a thousand
years later, that's plenty of time for the stories to become
myths.
I saw the excavations on Santorini. In 1500 BC they had
three-story buildings with indoor toilets. Pretty ace.
