I think that explains too why eastern SF was so surreal ?

Yes.  I recommend it.  His point is to establish that all
the terrors that happened under STalin, began under Lenin.
He wanted to shoot a hole in the idea that commienism was 
okay, Lenin was okay, Stalin screwed it up.  He does a good 
job of establishing that Lenin started the horrors.
