The conversation about Solaris gave me an urge to read the book
again. Now, after reading it about the 324th time I can assure you,
that its ending really _is_ "open", not "happy". I don't remember who
it was who claimed that the book has a happy ending... I repeat: No,
it has not. Read the book again.

In the end of the book, the main character Kris Kelvin stands on an
old Mimoid (an island-like formation in the Solaris sea) and thinks:
"We surely have many cruel surprises to see in the future." (bad
translation - I've only read the Finnish version of the book (which,
btw, is translated from the French translation...)) pointing to the
experiences with the thinking sea. (Hmmm... maybe I shouldn't reveal
anything more about the book... I've already spoiled the ending... ;)

Could it be possible that you had mixed up 2001 and Solaris by
mistake? 2001 - the book - has a lot more positive and straight
ending than 2001 - the movie. _There's_ a significant difference, but
not in Solaris.
