according to netcraft, apache is leading webserver on the market. apache
is unix software, although ports to various other platforms exist. ie. for
windows too, but this version is severely limited due to the capabilities
of windows os. (maybe developers are not interested in exploring the
horros of win32 native code to make it work) claiming that windows is
biggest single platform server might be true, as there is various flavours
of unix available, so fragmenting the market completely (linux, solaris,
freebsd, openbsd, netbsd, hpux, irix... and so on). but if these are
considered as one unix platform, as well as windows (nt, 95, 98,
win2k) the unix platform is the most used server operating system.

windows might be really good for office and gaming but when it comes to
server stuff, there's definately no chance. too much of administration
work needs to be done, too much downtime. set up a unix machine and it
will work flawlessy with minimal administration for years - actually until
the hardware breaks up.
