        Java and JavaScript work for different purposes. I think the same
applies for most good JavaScripts, if they're well done you scarcely pay
any attention to them (although they are run client-side as opposed to
Java servlets and stuff). 
        JavaScript can be used to do many useful things, too, besides those
gimmicky status window scrolling texts and other useless tricks. For
example:

        - checking user input on forms
        - detecting the user's browser and change of screen settings and
formatting the page accordingly
        - dynamically changing page elements according to user selection
        - enhancing standard HTML interface (dropdown menus that react
immediately to selection etc.)
        - introducing new UI possibilities (drag&drop, contextual menus,
floating menus etc.)
