true! and if you've read those, there's really no reason to bother with any 
other fantasy novels. they've got it all. my favorite is the invisibility paint 
invented by a mad scientist in one of those books - the explanation was that 
since the martians were so scientifically advanced, they had found a way to 
divert natural light so that it traveled around objects painted with this 
stuff, so that the onlooker only saw directly to what was behind. i remember 
how i read the book when i was like 12, and thought, "yeah, that's right, why 
doesn't somebody do this!"

it's also great how in every tarzan/martian novel by burroughs, there has to be 
this mad scientist or mad old witch doctor, who's several hundres of years old, 
has long curled fingernails, and eats young virgins or something.
