To catch some original East-Germany feeling close to Berlin, go to Potsdam.
You can get there by the local train.
Potsdam is very DDR, indeed. And in addition, there's Babelsberg, the former
movie studio area from the twenties. That's the place where Metropolis was
made!

In '87 I saw a statue of Ernst Thalmann (an East-German socialist national
hero) in Berlin, which looked exactly like Lenin. That was maybe because it
was carved by some Soviet sculptor. (... if I remember this correctly...)
