I was there in maybe 1993 and I didn't see so much old commie
stuff for sale. there's been MUCH more available (AFAIK) in
Tallinn. I even bought an entire officer's uniform, with jacket
(including "fruit salad" i.e. ribbons) and cap. I wore it once
walking thru Turku market square and people were checking
me out and saying, "SUOMI POIKAA!"

nice! I went out in the countryside too, I forget what the heck
I was looking for, but it WAS dramatically different from Berlin.
is the old Parliament still standing, and full of asbestos ?
one thing I looked for in Berlin was this triangle of land that had
a really odd history. it was on East German land but they didn't
bother to build the wall over it, it was maybe 50 meters on a side.
so anarchists could taunt the West German cops and when they
got chased they'd head for this triangle and the cops would leave
them alone and the East German border guards didn't give a damn.
does anyone remember the story about this triangle ?
are there any stories about it on the web ?
