Hmm, a movie they made us watch in school was "Threads". This was during the 80s, so still kind of believable, what with Raygun Ronnie and all the weird shit going on in Russia. In the UK, we always knew that we would be the first to get hit, due to all the US nukes installed all over the place. So Threads was about what happened *after* the big one. It was 18 certificate and pretty scary! Nobody over here had nuke shelters, except for the government! Actually, there's a really big one right near here, which is now a tourist attraction, I must visit sometime :) I was thinking about this stuff recently because I read "Biohazard" by Ken Alibek (kanatjan alibekov) who was like USSR's top biowarfare guy. It turns out, nukes were the least of your worries! Actually I recommend that book, it's pretty interesting given the anthrax attacks in the US..
