and, just riffing here: it looks to me like it might be better to
{{prepareReadPrimitive(1)}} and grab our {{firstByte}} before we do anything
else, since that permits us to short-circuit more quickly.
It would also be nice to simply generalise {{readMinimum}}, to choose when it
throws EOF. We don't buy much from grabbing the limit inline, I don't think.
