I will definitely take a closer look tomorrow, but at first blush I think this
will only work when we are synch'd on an actual driver release. This is more
commonly not the case as we bundle snapshots during new protocol evolution.
Maybe this will be less common with the protocol maturing, but thought I should
at least throw it out there.
