Jeremiah Jordan commented on CASSANDRA-7136:
--------------------------------------------
We are making this change at a major version flip, you need to diff that anyway
to see what you need to fix, as all kinds of yaml stuff becomes invalid and new
stuff added. bin/cassandra from the tar.gz should default to
$CASSANDRA_HOME/data, you almost never want it going to /var from a tar.gz
install in my experience. Hell, for most package manager installs you don't
actually want it going to /var, but at least for those you actually have
permission to write there most of the time.
> Change default paths to ~ instead of /var

> Defaulting to /var makes it more difficult for both multi-user systems and
> people unfamiliar with the command line.
