@TomPlanche your proposal lgtm. Make sure to have a look at the new links module #4506 introduced. It introduced a `ConnectCoordinator` and I think you could reuse this function https://github.com/apache/iggy/blob/12cc1f3cf3ef85debcb97421d5b9933dc18e2d8d/core/sdk/src/links/connect.rs#L198 in `disconnect` and `shutdown` to prevent further races.
