I think the prescribed change is unfortunately breaking. As Tony mentioned,
anyone implementing that class in their own code would have broken
implementations requiring code change. We could potentially just treat your
change as an overloaded method providing that alternative and carry out the
plan you specified for the items listed and mark the previous signature as
deprecated and to be removed upon reaching our next major release.
