This should be similar to when you have different output channels for a timer. You choose to use a channel or not and then the driver assumes the corresponding PINCFG define is there. The struct var can be set to 0 or not even initialized since it will not be used. On the SPI driver you mark the pin as disconnected when the macro is undefined.
