I guess the nimBLE porting layer could be modified so that it frees the buffer itself. It is kind of annoying to do it this way but it is possible. It may take a few weeks before I go back to nimBLE though (I will also ping the nimBLE devs since the PR there has been really quiet). I can revisit this when I get back to that.
