bq.  Boost's major, blocker-level drawback is it's compatibility with itself.

Just make sure we're on the same page, I think the boost library will be linked 
statically and no symbols will be exported. The user of the library should not 
be aware of the existence of boost. Therefore I don't quite understand where 
the compatibility issue is coming from. I played around locally and it worked 
for me. I can update the patch if needed.

Does it address your concern? If you don't like boost, I have no problems using 
an in-house implementation like what [~decster] did, or {{libuv}}.
