I think that's fair as long as (and I know we've talked about it before, but to 
clarify to the wider audience) that we also keep in mind that in some ways 
we're hamstrung by history.  If only we could _completely_ break 
compatibility... how different this change would be!  (#1: HADOOP_OPTS would 
die in a mysterious fire.) There are lots of things that are 'not proper' 
because of that. :(

Absolutely correct.  This was never intended to be reviewed as a diff in the 
traditional sense.
