The grace period as dictated by Hadoop's compatibility guidelines is
technically deprecate in branch-2, remove in a later release. Given that trunk
has been sitting there without a release for five years (or is it six now?),
there are likely to be a lot of things that are going to surprise developers.
I don't see any particular reason why this shouldn't be amongst the list.
Because let's be honest: now that the vendors control Hadoop's future, it's
going to be another five years before we see Hadoop 4.x. Let's take this
opportunity to remove all the cruft the community can.
