May I remind everybody that we made the 2.0 branch so that we can finally overhaul the architecture. This normally implies large scale API changes. Maintaining backwards compatibility and doing rearchitecture at the same time is really hard. The term "preserve backwards compatibility as much as possible" is a silly term since nobody will break an API for no reason. What we need right now is the freedom to move code in the right places, fix design flaws and create the API we desire.
