Hi Cary and all,
How could the Flickr group contribute significantly to Commons in the
long run? Does it connect to the Flickypedia project and/or the Commons
Photographers User Group? 23.5k photos is a good start, but Commons has
over 100m photos now.
Thanks,
Mike

I admire your willingness. Please provide me with your username and

your Flickr account.

Hi Cary,
Thanks for trying to bring this Flickr group back to life!
I don’t use use either the Commons or Flickr as much as I'd like
to, but I’ve been an editor/user on both sites for a long time
and I’m happy to be added as a moderator to the Commons group on
Flickr.
Caroline: as far as I can tell, Flickr will let you search *for*
CC-* or (for Commons purposes) CC licenses that allow commercial
reuse within a group [1], but not the inverse. I wonder if
there’s some way we could throw all 23.5k photos into the
moderation queue, then automatically moderate the 14k photos
that have the right license so we can figure out what to do with
the others. We should probably send Flickr a feature request for
an enforced restriction that “photos submitted to this group
must have one of these licenses”, even though that’s unlikely to
be implemented any time soon.
The Flickr API does have an endpoint that lets you download all
the photo metadata from a group, including the license [2]. I
don’t think it would be too hard to write a Python script that
downloads all that information into a spreadsheet that we can
stick on Google Drive to coordinate our efforts or something,
but I won’t have the time to do that for several weeks or months :(
Cheers,
Gaurav

Can we do a search on CC licenses to pull out incompatible ones?
Once we’ve handled the backlog it should be easier to manage
the daily additions.

Hi Cary,
Thank you for bringing this up and your efforts in managing
the Wikimedia Commons Group on Flickr. Currently, we have
more than 28.1K photos of the Flickr group. In that case, I
wish there was any tool that could prevent uploading images
that are not incompatible with CC licenses. By human effort,
it does not seem practical.

I'm looking for people to help moderate the group to
remove photographs that don't have licenses compatible
with Commons, and remove users who repeatedly add photos
with incorrect licenses. Maybe leave a message for them
but honestly, some of these people are just submitting
photos to every group they can.
Also, if something falls completely outside the scope of
Commons, probably remove those too...

I'm an admin of the Wikimedia Commons Group
<https://www.flickr.com/groups/30009679@N00> on
Flickr, a group that has, up until now, had no
moderation for numerous years. Given my uptick
in activity on Flickr (resulting from my uptick
on Commons) I'm hoping to change that.
Photographs in the group ought to be able to be
readily able to be ported to Commons, thereby
having a free license. People who sign up for the
group agree to that rule. However, currently
numerous people are just sharing photographs that
they share on numerous other groups for exposure.
I do not have the bandwidth to moderate
completely on my own. Is anyone else currently a
regular Flickr user that would be willing and
able to help out?
