Actually - if done well - it could also be used to resolve APR
dependencies; or even (auth) module dependencies. I.e. be able
to do
./configure --with-module=mod_auth_foo
(I will not go as far as suggest a 'LoadModule' in apache with that -
though I could easily imagine certain CoLo's to love such).
