I could definitely picture a simple MMO. A game world of locations, and when you get close to a location in the real world, a minigame pops up on your phone that you need to complete for +100 exp, or whatever. You could have a leader board to see who's explored more of the world.
I know I'd walk a block or two out of my way if I saw on my game map a chance for a few more xp!
