It doesn't work against your mounted rootfs.

usb storage gadget can work if you elect a file to contain the shared
filesystem, or you share the unmounted whole SD card for example.  But
each of those has ramifications that do not happen if you share the
rootfs over a network connection.

Each of the options has problems, folks are free to choose their
favoured way...
