If the main thing is getting software, you might consider using a ftp 
program like fetch, which works pretty fast and stable on older macs 
running ancient operating systems.
When looking for software I can recommend ftp.jagshouse.com for one, 
but there are others.
Maybe we should make a list of ftp servers featuring older mac software.
I must confess that the download sites I offer on my webpage are 
mostly html based, but that's because I personally wouldn'trouble 
myself trying to run webbrowsers on anything below a g3...
