Hello all, a few questions I can't find in the archives/faq:

1. I completely disassembled the fan on my newly purchased Mac SE because
it was too loud, hoping to find dirt to be the culprit. Unfortunately,
after removing all dirt with a toothbrush and removing and lubricating the
two bearings, I still find that it is too loud, though it seems to spin
freely. The fan is so loud that the spinning of the internal 20MB HD(which
is quite loud) can't be discerned over it. Has the SE always been this
loud? Is there any way to quiet it that won't compromise cooling? Would an
SE/30 be quieter?

2. Has anyone done any measurements of the power consumptions of the
compacts? I've found the power consumptions listed in Apple's spec
database, but was hoping to find some measurements based on actual usage.or
do they always consume the listed power? Is there any way to turn off the
CRT? I'm trying to figure the price of running one as a server 24/7, with
content about classic Macs (I'll post the URL if I ever decide to run it
full time:)

3. Is it bad to use undiluted clorox bleach to unfade beige (platinum)
cases? Someone posted that they use Clorox Cleanup Gel, saying that bleach
was too harsh. I used pure bleach on my extremely suntanned SE, then
covered it with cling wrap so it wouldn't evaporate, and it took about
48hrs to bring it to the original platinum color. It came out great looking
(even the tanline where something was sitting on the case is gone), but I'm
hoping it won't eventually cause discoloration/disintegration. Has anyone
else ever tried this?

4. Do new SCSI internal hard drives support activity indicator diodes
like the little red light on my SE's HD? No way I'm using a bigger HD with
no indicator light;)

5. This question is probably more appropriate for another list, but does
anyone still have an older version of MPW that will run on an SE 2.5/20?
I'm interested in doing some 68000 assembly programming, but only have
Macintosh Development System 1.0, which doesn't even seem to know about or
be able to handle HFS (it runs under system 1.1).

6. Is there/will there ever be a way to fix CRT burn in?

7. I'm interested in the SE/30 grayscale upgrade, I've always known about
those cards but they've always been too much $$ on ebay. Sounds like it
needs an SE/30 video card, which I'm probably not going to be able to get.
I'm have little knowledge on the subject, but how hard would it be to make
the video card, so that the whole thing could be made from scratch? I hope
your current plan doesn't involve sacrificing too much precious antique
hardware:-p

Anyway, I'm posting this from my SE, getting tired of the low refresh rate
and its 4AM so sorry for the length, I'm not sure if these multiple
questions should be in 1 post.

Thanks,
Craig Baker
