Step One: Yank it open, disconnect everything that can be disconnected from everything else(be careful with the CRT connections, read about how to work on CRTs beforehand), blow everything clean with compressed air, replace the motherboard battery and swap in a hard drive you know works, hook everything back together and see where you are.
