In addition to Tyler's "Step One" process, examine the motherboard very
carefully for small amounts of a sticky substance around some of the
small capacitors. For some reason, the electrolytic capacitors on SE/30s
seem to leak much more than on other compact Macs. On three separate
instances, when one of my SE/30s began exhibiting the "SimasiMac" disease
(the screen pattern you described, and the pause before the BONG!), I
used a Q-Tip moistened with alcohol and cleaned away the sticky leakage,
and the computer returned to normal operation. Now, I know this fix
won't work forever, and I'll eventually have to replace the capacitors,
but so far, so good! :-)
