On my SE30/IIfxROM with 20MB of RAM it occurs only for about 2 seconds. It lasts longer for you because you have 128 MB of RAM. IOW the checkboard pattern is happening during the RAM check that is done for cold but not hot starts. I don't know if having the wrong ROM is causing the RAM check to last longer than normal. or shorter than normal. IF everything else is working OK then don't worry about it.
