I ripped my hair out over a Mac II last week. It gave me chimes from the RAM
already installed, even though it came to me as a working unit. All the
combinations proved useless until I swapped for 8 identical one-meg. sticks
from the pile I own.

The moral?

Some Macs have flaws on-board. First, look at your "fingers" on the
motherboard where the RAM clip in. A bent or dirty one of the sixty in each
slot will be enough to make it not work.

Also, use the rubber eraser trick on the RAMsticks.
