Anyone care to 'splain why the 4K SIMMs I've used work in *some* older Macs
but not others?  Differences in the tolerances of the RAM controllers,
perhaps?

That's "the pickle" to you, Mister :)  Honestly, I have yet to see 30-pin
noncomposite RAM that *doesn't* work in a Mac, which was the reason for my
(admittedly vague) reply.
