Sounds to me like there's either something wrong with the floppy drive, or 
perhaps the controller. About the only thing it could be, aside from a 
spate of bad disks.

I'm a little fuzzy on this one myself, and I may be be confusing it with 
the non-Superdrive SEs, but I believe there was what was called a SWIM chip 
upgrade made that allowed Pluses to use HD disks. It was pricy in its day, 
and is somewhat rare now.
