My guess now is the SE FDHD was done the same way as the Mac II FDHD
upgrade, which was new ROMs and new IWM chip, in both Macs socketed.
And SE FDHD retained it's 3 floppy support.
And in SE30 et al had new floppy controller which was called SWIM instead
of IWM.
