Netscape Navigator 2.02 on 68030. THE SHORT STORY: Turn off Javascript. Add Netscape Defrost and Bombshelter extensions. Increase RAM allotment to maximum possible. Use Open Transport 1.1.2 and OT/PPP. If you're visiting commercial websites use iCab instead. THE LONG STORY: I wouldn't run NN2 on an SE/30 with less than 20MB of RAM. NN2, unlike other (useful) browsers, does not borrow memory space from the system heap when it needs it. That's a big factor in it's better speed. When it runs out of its alloted memory space it will crash. Whether the crash is hard (requiring a reboot) or soft (not requiring a reboot) depends on system, add-ons, and classic or modern networking. Browsers like iCab that do borrow from system heap slow down a lot when they do that, rather, the blame for slowness probably goes more to the 68030 than it does to the browser. The workaround for both types of browsers is to increase their RAM allotment to as large as possible. On this 65 MB IIci I run NN2 with a 16.384 MB allotment. Many of today's web pages have code that NN2 can't cope with. At best that slows down NN2 as it eats up huge amounts of RAM allotment.. At worst that causes crashes, typically by freezing up. iCab can also be a problem if not set up right. For instance, disabling multiple conections.
