you might save yourself allot of time and trouble by just giving it a
couple of coats of white paint before painting it the color you want, if
it will be a light color.  silver or gold or some other bright color
might be interesting as well if the final color is semi-transparent.  if
you scrape of the old paint you will likely damage the texture and leave
gauge marks (sp?) in the case.  although likely with that much paint the
texture will be obscured.  on the other hand there are paints that have
a definite texture, might be interesting to use one of those for the
bottom or even top layer.  of course you could also re-texture it with
coarse sand paper etc. to your liking, if you've really got too much
time on your hands. ;)
