i've always done fine hand washing mac cases with a little dish soap. 
re: the dishwasher problem, it was probably due not to the aggressive
water spray but rather the automatic dishwasher soap, most of them
contain allot of lye and sometimes a bleach, not good for your' hands or
electronics, but excellent for dissolving food and not sudsing, similar
to draino!
