Have you tried running an appropriate (ie older) version of Norton Utilities, or some other disk repair program, to see if it can recognize and repair the drive? Apple has an old built-in disk repair program whose name I forget but it never seemed to handle tough stuff like unrecognizable drives. I have not had a lot of success restoring crashed hard drives, but fortunately it hasn't happened to me much. Then again, I did manage to recover a floppy, which contained the ONLY up-to-date copy of my dissertation, which chose to go bad on the day I was printing out the final draft. Good luck!
