Hi! A couple of years ago, I bought a 128Kb Mac that turned out to be one upgraded to 512ke spec. :-(
A new 128Kb l/b and 400Kb drive 'solved' that that one, except that the 'new' Sony drive fouled on the drive bracket. I ordered the one listed for 128Kb Macs at SunRem.com, only to find that that had the same problem. I used a hacksaw to solve the problem inelegantly. About a year ago, a friend gave me a brand new bracket which, he said, would fit. Tonight I finally got round to fitting it. ;-) And it did, and it's clear that whatever SunRem say, there were two distinct versions of the drive bracket for early compact Macs. The later one has a straight vertical side on the side of the bracket nearest the outside of the Mac. The earlier one has a kink in the vertical side, to clear the 'piston' eject mechanism on the side of those early Sony 400Kb drives. The moral is: if you have a 128Kb Mac with a 400Kb drive, and even if all is dead and about to head for the skip, and the drive is bad and the case is yellowed, still keep the drive bracket. OK? ;-) Stuart -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
