Thanks to all who responded. I am really stumped. I've tried everything
from 4.0.5 (thanks for the bundle, Hal) through 5.0.4 (interesting
symmetry, that) to 5.4. The best I am able to get is an error message
displaying an open hand on an octogon and the text "Please unlock the disk
"xxxxx" and try again. The desktop file couldn't be created." Right hard to
do that in a read-only drive. :-P
Grumpy, grumpy, grumpy ...
What's the obvious Mac technique this aging main-framer and *nix user is
overlooking?
