Not always. I found the desktop manager to be incompatible with my 
current Mac Plus setup. In my current setup the plus runs from ram 
disk and is connected over ethernet with a os x file server. The 
desktop manager seems not to agree with either the  ram disk or the 
OS X fileserver...
