Yo compacters everywhere,

Success!!! This is a first eMail from a 575 running MacOS 8.1, iCab 2.8,
and Eudora Light 3.1.3. It doesn't scream and I have many of the features
deselected but it is working. YES! Oh, yeah, and the eMail download to me
is being achieved despite my Prodigy ISP's least effort to make things easy
via their webmail access. Upload here is via trusty Eudora and all is well.

Hey, a 575 doing the web!?! This is right down the throat of Mark Winkler
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
who askz:

>I have six LC575s and...what I would like to do is at least provide them
>with Internet capability...what
do I need to do...?

Very little to an awful lot depending on your expectation. Having fun with
old Macs and old software to stay alive is easy. To give your 575 and out
of the box gooseneck iMac experience is more effort that it is worth if we
measure by your pocketbook. By your question on the 575 right in front of
me:

>Will they work with High Speed?

If we mean will they work with a DSL connection, yes, they will. But many a
DSL provider will not knowingly hook up a 68k Mac. They want a PowerMac
minimum. As the 68k will connect to a DSL modem just fine with your
ethernet cards, you may have to do a shell game. Install one of those
6400s. When the DSL tech leaves (if you even see one) remove the 6400 and
plug up your 575. An ethernet connection is an ethernet connection is an
ethernet connection all the same to them. I do believe they just have no
interest in training their tech support staff to deal with our older
equipment. A 56k dialup modem works pretty good where cost is a factor and
you say it is. I am sending this over a 28k modem. My lack of typing skills
is a greater speed penalty than my slow modem.

>What printers can we use with them?

Any printer using an Apple serial cable will do just fine so long as you
have the driver (Chooser Extension) for it. This means any printer from an
ImageWriter II through an Epson 740 will work well. Any inkjet, any laser
printer, so long as they use an Apple serial cable and you have the driver.

>What OS do they need?

System 7.1 through MacOS 8.1. Your choice. I like the features of 8.1. Fer
schurr, you ain't gonna run no System 6 on those 575s.

>Can you increase storage capacity?

Sure. I use 500 MB or so drives in these puppies. Your needs may require
more or less.

>Can you increase CD ROM drive speeds?

Sure, just swap the CD-ROM drive for a faster one. make sure you use an
appropriate driver.

>How difficult is it to obtain extra RAM?

In the 575, you are gonna want to put a 32 MB RAM SIMM in there to max it
at 36 MB. These SIMMs are less than $10 so do it. Bye the waye, I bought a
fistful of 64 MB 72 pin SIMMS from OWC intending them for 6100s. Guess
what? They all worked just fine in 575s and 475s. OWC won't say they will
work but they do.

>Can the monitors be used for other machines?

Huh? Somehow, this does not seem like a 575 question. However, unless you
have high-end graphics monitors with those BNC connectors, any Apple
monitor is going to work with a 475 or 6400. Apple multiple scan monitors
often have trouble working with Macs older thanan LC III. Non Apple VGA
monitors will generally work with a Mac if you are fortunate at the plug
adapter business. A PDS video card in your 575 follows these rules.

The 575 is a 33 MHz "fast Quadra" for speed and quite versatile in its OEM
form. Liberate RAM, drives, and software from where you must. Keep your
expectations real. And this will bring a lot of fun to a lot of people. If
someone things the 575 a bit slow, why, they can exercise their
get-up-and-go and buy something better on their own nickle.

And welcome to you Mark.

Bill
