>it looks like the ADB comes >out of the VIA1. Is that a custom Apple chip or something which is >more generally available?
If it's a bad chip it's more likely to be UL11, which is a custom chip for sure. But fuse F1 should be checked with ohmmeter. >page which discusses a "homemade clone of the Micron Technology >'Xceed Gray-Scale 30' adapter". Gamba, is there a schematic or >plans for this available anywhere? The schematic and plans were on my site a long time ago. I decided to remove them until I recover the NRE costs. Recovering costs is taking a lot longer than I expected because of falling eBay bid prices for my GSA's and declining interest in the SE/30. > Does one require the Xceed >video card in order to use the gray scale adapter? Please go back and re-read the page. It tells exactly which Xceed cards are required. >And is it true >that if one has an external monitor connected, the gray scale adapter >is not active? True. >I read with interest the various attempts to get an ethernet >card, video card and CPU upgrade into the case. Is the conclusion >at this point that it is not doable? It's doable, but, AFAIC, with Xceed, not without a custom splitter card. See below for other shorter video cards. >Might it work better with a >different video card or is the Exceed the best choice for these >experiments. If so, what makes it the best? A video card that is shorter than an Exceed would fit fine. But certain Xceed cards are the only ones that provide internal grayscale compatibility. >So far I have some Daystar Turbo 040 upgrades and three different PDS >slot adapters. I'm not sure that any of these are useful PDS slot >adapters though. That is, I suspect that none of them are actually >for the Turbo 040. I suspect likewise. AFAIK the only adapters that DayStar made for the SE30/IIsi were for their 68030 "Cache" cards. But the Turbo 040 33MHz works for me with a DayStar IIsi PDS adapter. That's the good news. The bad news is the Turbo 040 is not compatible with Xceed video cards. The 50 MHz 68030 is a decent alternative. >One is a SuperMac "Dual PDS Adapter". I'm guessing that's no good >for the Turbo 040 because the Turbo 040 plugs directly into a IIci >cache slot and the IIci cache slot is reputedly different from the >IIsi/SE30 slot. The slots are different. But for which Mac was the "SuperMac 'Dual PDS Adapter'" designed for? >So I would guess that the adapter needs to do >something to the SE/30 pinout before a Turbo 040 will work. Yes. >I also have two Daystar 01-PSIAD-002P adapters. These each have a >PLD on them and one slot is labeled "For Daystar Cache Cards Only" >and the other is labeled "For PDS Cards Only". The big question >here, is will these work with the Turbo 040 or are they for an older >Daystar upgrade? Those numbers appear on my DayStar IIsi PDS adpater, but they might be just the part number of the unstuffed circuit card, because it's etched on that card. But that at least defines the trace connectons, so I think no harm would come from trying it. The IIsi adapter won't fit into the SE/30 PDS slot unless the chassis is modified. One way to avoid doing that is to install the IIsi adapter on top of an Asante ethernet card that has the PDS passthrough connector... >Last question group. Has it been confirmed that the IIfx ROM will >work in the SE/30? Does it work well? What about the IIsi ROM? >Is the IIci ROM differnt from the IIsi? My experience has been that the IIfx and IIsi ROM Simms work equally well in the SE/30 if I ignore brief glitches during boot. >Yet the silk screening on the ROM says "512K >ROM SIMM" Ignore the silk screening. The only thing that matters is the chips. See <http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/os8_se30.html#simm> Gamba <http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2> -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
