I just telnetted into my Linux box and went to both earthlink.net and LEM in links and w3m, and both worked quite well and usably. Then I went to cnn.com and foxnews.com and read up on some New Years stuff, then went over to microsoft.com and downloaded the latest IE for Mac for no really good reason. It's not quite as nice as a full graphical browser with images, flash, java/script and the like, but I'd say it's far from useless. Right speedy too.
