Works here, you must be quick with your key selection. Also watch the 
caps lock key as its very easy to slip on to.
 With a disk inserted while the classic is off, holding 
Command-Option-x-o ejects the disk and boots from rom.
The disk is non-mac so it may be a given that the floppy is spat out on 
rom boot.

Isn't there a key combo to eject the floppy?
You sure your not just being too gentle with

Gentle manipulation with buttonless floppy through the hole

while you torture your keyboard? :)
