Hi, dear compacters.
I lurked for some time in your list and solved part of my problems.
You guys fantasticaly loyal fans of this collectors items, and I can
only thanx you a lot. Special thanks to thepickle, his macfaq happened
for me as a starting point to adventurous voyage.
Also, back to my troubles.
Mac Classic I got in it's turn had a long and strange life. It arrived
from Italy, with StyleWriter, craps of software and cryptic Italian
MacOS unknown version. Considering my 20+ year computer expirience and
current Linux servers employment, it was natural the desire to format
the disk and install some russian OS. Thanks to ftp.apple.com, this is
possible and absolutely legal.
After preparing the install disks on a Linux machine I succeded to
boot a couple of MacOS versions, 7.0.1 Russian and 6.0.7 Int. English.
The former even some way had been installed on a hard drive. But I didn't
stop there ...
With a disk setup utility from 6.0 I tried to completely clean the drive
and to some point succeed. I asked the program to make a one Macintosh
partition on it's 40MB HD. The last thing I saw in a partition table
was 2 very specific slices - partition table and SCSI driver, at the
very beginning of a disk. After my experiments neither entire disk nor
the partition table are visible.
Sure, I'd continued the adventures. I prepared another set of
installation disk and fired up mein old Mac again. Schade, the first
setup disk was not perfect, and at some point installation process
stuck. Gentle manipulation with buttonless floppy through the hole
hadn't help me free the disk, neither had any keyboard combinations.
So, I ask you the allmighty to help me solve this puzzles. How to
free the poor floppy and how to revive the hard drive after my risky
experiments.
Thanks again, folks, who read this tragic story up to this final point,
and hope for the good advice.
