I think the main problem is there doesn't seem to be any consistent
nomenclature regarding the early systems, which weren't really called "System
X" until at least System 5.  The System file and Finder file were often of
different versions, and what LEM refers to as "System 3.2" was probably what
Apple is referring to as "System 1.1," wherein the System file may well be
version 1.1 but the Finder is something completely different and the whole
release an incremental update after the third full release of the Mac OS,
giving rise to the 3.2 nomenclature.
